L'article indéfini (The indefinite article)

In French, there are three forms of the indefinite article, depending on the number and gender of the noun it accompanies:

  • with a masculine singular noun: un (a)
  • with a feminine singular noun: une (a)
  • with a plural noun (masc or fem): des (some)

Note: des is often not translated in english

-il y ades nauges dans le ciel (there are clouds in the sky)

Use

  • Indefinite article is used in the same way as its In English
-un homme (a man)
-une femme (a woman)
-des hommes/femmes (some men/women)
-un livre (a book)
-une tasse (a cup)
-des livres/ tasses (some books/cups)

The English indefinite article is not always translates in French

  • when stating someone's profession or occupation
-mon père est architecte (my father is an architect)
-elle est médecin (he is a doctor)
But : the article is used after c'est, c'est etc
-c'est un acteur célèbre (he's a famous actor)
-ce sont des fraises (these are strawberries)
  • after quel in exclamation
-quel dommage! (what apity !)
-quelle suprise (what a suprise !)

In negative sentences, de (or d') is used instead of un, une, des. (it shows zero quntity of the things)

-je n'ai pas d'amis (I dont't have any friends)
-je n'ai plus de  voiture (what a suprise !)
But: with être verb no changes with negative sentences( we will learn in verbs section)
-David n'est pas un officier (David is not an officer)

In French, the indefinite article is used with abstract nouns followied by an adjective

-avec une patience remarquable (with remarkable patience)
-elle a fait des progrés étonnants (she's made amazing progress)
But : the article is not used when there is no adjective
-avec plaisir (with pleasure)
-sans hésitation (without hesitation)
