Verbes auxiliaires modaux (Modal auxiliary verbs)

Followed by infinitive, they express an obligation, an intention, a probaility, a possibility or a wish rather than a fact

1. Devoir

   Expresses obligation, necessity, probability, intention, expectation

   • obligation

     -nous devons arriver à temps(we must arrive in time)
     -demain tu devra prendre le bus(tomorrow you will have to take the bus)
     -nous avions dû partir(we had to go)
     -j'ai dû avouer que j'aivais tort(I had to admit that I was wrong)
     

     In the conditional devoir may be used for advise, ie to express what should be done (conditional present) or should have been done (past conditional)

     -vous devriez travailler davantage(you ought to /should work harder)
     -tu ne devrais pas marcher sur l'herbe(you shoould not walk on the grass)
     -tu aurais dû tout avouer(you should have admitted everything)
     -tu n'aurais pas dû manger ces champignons(ou shouldn't have eaten those mushrooms)
     

   • probability

     -il doit être en train de dormir(he must be sleeping (he is probably sleeping))
     -j'ai dû me tromper de chemin(I must have raken the wrong road)
     -il dit qu'il avait du se tromper de chemin(he said he must taken the wrong raod)
     

   • intention, expectation

     -je dois aller chez le dentiste(I am supposed to go to the dentist's)
     -le train doit arriver à 19h30(the train is die to arrive at 7:30 PM)
     

2. Pouvoir

   Expresses capacity, ability, permission, possibility

   • capacity, ability

     -Superman peut seulever une maison(Superman can lift a house)
     -cette voiture oeut faire du 150(this car can go up to 93mph)
     -il était si faible qu'il ne pouvait pas sortir de son lit(he was so weak that he couldn't get out of bed)
     

   • permission

     -puis-je entrer?(may i come in?)
     -puis-je vous offrir du thé?(may I offer you some tea?)
     

   • possibility

     -cela peut arriver(it can arriver)
     

     Note: puovoir + the infinitive is usually replaced by peut-être and the finite tense; il s'est peut-être trompéde livres(he may have taken the wrong books)

     In conditional pouvoir is used to express something that could or might be (conditional present) or that could or might have been (past conditional)

     -tu pourrais t'excuser(you might apologize)
     -j'aurais pu vous prêter mon magnétophone(I could have lent you my tape recorder)
     

     Note: with verb of perception (eg entendre to hear, sentir to feel, to smell, voir to see)

     -j'entendais le bruit des vagues(I could hear the sound of the waves)
     

3. Pouvoir

   Means "to know how to"

   -je sais/savais conduire une moto(I know/knew how to drive a motorcycle)
   

4. Vouloir

   Expresses desire, wish, intention

   • desire

     -je veux partir(i want to go)
     -voulez-vous danser avec moi?(will you dance with me?)
     

   • wish

     -je voudrais être un lapin(I wish I were a rabbit)
     -je voudrais trouver un travail intéressant(I should like to find an interesting job)
     -j'aurais voulu lui donner un coup de poing(I would have liked to punch him)
     

   • intention

     -il a voulu sauter par la fenêtre(he tried to jump out of the window)
     

     Note: veuillez the imperative of vouloir is used as a polite form to express a request (would you please)

     -veuillez ne pas déranger(please do not disturb)
     

5. Falloir

   Expresses necessity

   -il faut manger pour vivre(you must eat to live)
   -il faudrait manger plus tôt ce soir(we should eat earlier tonight)
   -il aurait fallu appoerter des sandwichs(we should have brought sandwiches)
