The feminine of nouns may be formed in the following ways:

Add an e to the masculine

un ami (a male friend)          une amie(a female friend)
un Hollandais(a Dutchman)       une Hollandaise(a Dutch woman)

nouns which end in e in the masculine do not change:

un élève(a male pupil)      une élève(a female pupil)
  • nouns ending in t and n double th final consonant:
le chien(dog)       la chienne(bitch)
le chat             la chatt(cat)
  • nouns ending in er add è + r + e:
un ouvrier(workman)         une ouvrière(female worker)
  • nouns ending in eur changes to euse:
le vendeur(male shopkeeper)         la vendeuse(female shopkeeper)

But: a few nouns ending in eur changes into eresse
le pécheaur(sinner male)        la pécheresse(sinner female)

  • nouns ending in teur changes to teuse or trice

    • if the stem of the word is also that of a present participle the feminine form is in euse:
      le chanteur(male singer) la chanteuse(female singer)
    • if the stem is not of present participle the feminine form is in trice:
      le lecteur(male singer) la lectrice(female singer)

  • nouns ending in f changes to ve:

le veuf(widower)         la veuve(widow)
  • nouns ending in eau changes to elle:
le jumeau(male twin)         la jumelle(female twin)
